Nowhere on the page is it mentioned why the idea for the sale stopped, but it does appear that the FDA has yet to rule on whether to include any specific genetic engineering clauses in regulations that have the potential to "inhibit, restrict, or restrict the use of genetically engineered materials for any purpose." The FDA's list of GMO labeling requirements is somewhat lengthy:

A. The agency does not prohibit or restrict labeling or any kind of labeling or labeling or labeling of genetically engineered food ingredients. B. The agency does not impose new labeling requirements or changes to existing labeling or labeling requirements for any kind of genetically engineered food product or supplement, or for any products or nutrients from genetically modified organisms. C. The agency does not require the use, sale, or distribution of any commercial or non-commercial ingredient of any type from genetically modified organisms for any purpose.

Notice that this rule does not "require" that all such products be GM, and that it does not specifically specify that GM ingredients are not "commercial ingredients."

If what the FDA does is require that "commercial" proteins be given to people with "unconventional conditions", then it seems clear that that would be a much better idea; even if those conditions have already existed since the start of industrial breeding, why not have the "unconventional" conditions removed?
