house plants infested with gnats, a species of beetle that attacks large cedar trees.
The species has had an increasingly severe bite — but it's no longer considered a menace.
In Colorado, a study published in the May issue of The Journal of Insect Ecology predicted that by 2040, the amount of time farmers could use gnats for pest control in each state could rise from 12 to nearly 20 years.
Some experts say the new study is needed.
"This suggests that they're taking the idea of a threat model of pests to include the risk of habitat loss, and not the species itself," said study co-author Andrew Egelton-Dennett, an ornithologist at the University of Denver and a co-author of the study. "And we need to find out what happened in a time when herbivore beetles are declining."
But it needs support from scientists from the United States, Japan, Canada and Europe to go farther than past studies of how invasive species have made a comeback in the Great Lakes. The Great Lakes are a major source of food and water for both nature and humans, and they've become a major source of food for animals living in their habitat.
The research is particularly important in the Central and Northeast regions.
Determining the amount that the Great Lakes will spend fighting off invasive species could help in developing a better understanding of how to keep the birds that feed on them healthy.
