The U.S. Department of Agriculture recently discovered traces of arsenic in the manure of a family of two farms in Pennsylvania that were exposed to tainted water during a mine cleanup this summer.

The EPA will publish data on arsenic levels and other contaminants in the U.S. in mid-January, says USDA inspector Tim Purdy. He estimates arsenic levels in the soil may reach 1,500 times normal for Americans.

Purdy says the arsenic levels are at a "high" and will go up "slowly." The agency wants to notify its workers at each of its schools "that those levels have already decreased in many school districts."

The EPA will report its findings "in its February final reports."

The EPA is working with some local authorities and local organizations to help remove the contaminated water, but many local communities are under huge pressure.

"It's going to take a very long time to change the climate," says Jim Smith at the California State University of Southern California.

That requires raising the possibility of water contamination from the pollution of groundwater, the largest source of CO2 worldwide, and the chemical industry, which has been the world's biggest polluter.

In October, the EPA recommended a ban on all power plants based on their arsenic concentration. This was the final straw.

State legislators want further federal action on the issue
