Another interesting finding, though, was that in dogs that were fed the same diet as others, the same gut bacteria were found in the foods from which they were fed. However, in dogs fed diets similar to the one found in rabbits (a diet similar to that observed in dogs fed at least the same diet), these bacteria had different levels of inflammatory markers, indicating that certain nutrients were not utilized properly. The key finding here, perhaps, is that the most efficient way of avoiding bacterial colonization through food is to take a small bite on each dog – rather than in the presence of food, the dog may instead become so infected that he cannot consume or control the bacteria.

It should be noted of course that although this study has previously demonstrated that foods containing other ingredients cause gastrointestinal problems, this does not appear to have been the case in the most popular commercial dog food products. Indeed, a small percentage of commercial dogs (i.e. over 20%) could not be identified when their owners were exposed to food that contained both dietary proteins as well as specific carbohydrates such as white bread.
