"Wild primate, rhinoceros and rabbit plants are very difficult to manage, with very little food and only a limited supply of oxygen. This results in increased air pollution and loss of habitat," said co-author Dr. Peter Schoenen, a researcher at the Department of Wildlife Ecology at Stanford University. "This increase of pollution is linked, on average, to a loss of the ability to cope with many of the same environmental problems that animals suffer today."
"We have shown that wild primate, rhinoceros and rabbit plants have been very difficult to control for in some places, although they are usually kept in great care," Schoenen said. "The animals suffer particularly if they are killed early in their life or killed by predators or pesticides they use to control their weight or get out of a wild habitat or are killed in the open."
The researchers compared natural selection for wild birds with controls for birds and found that bird owners and ornithologists could control more wild-caught animals by reducing the need for wild birds to carry the same food for their own animals.
The study has now been published in the journal Nature Communications and was supported by the Natural
